由美國睡眠研究學(xué)者J. A. Hobson及 R. W. McCarley于西元1977年所提出之理論，用以解釋夢的形成。根據(jù)“活化－整合”假說，夢的出現(xiàn)與特征是快速動眼睡眠（rapid-eye- movement sleep，REM sleep）狀態(tài)時生理運作的產(chǎn)物。當(dāng)快速動眼睡眠由橋腦（pons）活化所啟動時，和意識有關(guān)的大腦網(wǎng)路接受橋腦刺激訊號也呈現(xiàn)活化狀態(tài)，因而大腦將這些由下而上的刺激訊號混合整理后即為夢的展現(xiàn)。由于此時大腦的活化是處于被動型式且訊息來源為隨機，封閉（由橋腦產(chǎn)生），因此缺乏清醒狀態(tài)時的自覺及反省，展現(xiàn)于夢境內(nèi)容也因而有怪異，不合邏輯的特性。
